Editorial by Christophe Soumillon: “Crossing the post in the lead in a Deauville classic is always a moment of pure pleasure”

It is at German time that my recovery in the official competition will take place. On forced rest since July 15th due to my layoff following post-race discomfort with Vadeni in the Coral Eclipse Stakes, I can’t wait to get my boots back on.

This Sunday, July 31, 2022, I will therefore not be performing near Clairefontaine, but in Munich! In the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis, I would have the pleasure of being associated with the representative of His Highness’s cassock Aga-Khan, Ebayra. Quite naturally, after his fine victory recently obtained at the Chantilly racecourse, Francis Graffard takes him across the Rhine in hopes of winning a Group 1.

Even though Sammarcowinner of the German Derby, and Queroyal, who will be much better over 2000 meters, are clients, we are traveling in the hope of taking over from a Skalleri who had made the tricolor shine last year by outclassing the opposition.

Munich before Deauville

The next day, I will be on the Dieppe racecourse before starting the famous summer meeting in Deauville which begins on August 2, Tuesday. The Deauville meeting, for all racing professionals, is an extraordinary moment of very great importance.

With five Group 1 events, plenty of group races and a great summer atmosphere, this international meeting is a must on the calendar, which I always enjoy attending. Last year, the meeting was rather good since I had the chance to win one of the five “G1”, namely the Morny Prize, thanks to the brilliant sprinter Perfect Power. Crossing the post in the lead in a Deauville classic is always a moment of pure pleasure as few are lucky enough to have done so…

Start of the Deauville meeting with the Rothschild Prize

On Tuesday, the Rothschild Prize will open the ball for group events. I already had the pleasure of winning this race when it was still called “Prix d’Astarté”. I remember, it was in 2006, in the saddle on mandeshawith the Princess’s gown Zahra Aga KhanI dominated Impressive, a filly from the Wertheimer family.

Subsequently, I unfortunately did not have the chance to win this G1 again. In 2008, with Darjinaanother representative of the family Aga-KhanI finished strong but had to settle for a runner-up place behind a certain Goldikovabefore doing the same last year with sagamyra. Let’s now hope that the 2022 vintage, in which I will participate, will be an excellent vintage and will deliver a very high-level winner.
