This is now possible via the Scholen van Vlaanderen (Schools of Flanders) program which kicked off on July 1st. Succeeding Scholen van Morgen (Schools of Tomorrow) which saw the creation of 133,000 additional places, this program aims to create 85,000 new places and innovates by allowing individuals to invest in each new project. Initially, 27 new schools will be built in partnership with the private sector using the DBFM formula (Design, Build, Finance, Maintain). Their total cost is estimated at 400 million euros. In the autumn, the second phase of this project will be launched, involving 600 million euros. On this occasion, and in order to involve the citizens more, each Fleming will be able to become a shareholder of a school to be built and, in this way, benefit from a stable return. To avoid any disappointment, however, individuals will only be able to become shareholders in their school once the shell of the building has been completed.
