Maud Larochette (N-SIDE): “Finance has an impact” – Companies

First CFO, but also HRD and even CEO for a moment, Maud Larochette supported the important development of N-SIDE.

With two master’s degrees in her pocket, in management from the Clermont-Ferrand Business School and in geopolitics from UCLouvain, Maud Larochette took her first steps into the job market in September 2007. She is an auditor at Deloitte. Then we find it business controller at Voo, then at Fedex, where she spent almost five years and became financial manager. She arrived in March 2017 at N-SIDE, a scale-up that combines applied mathematics and software technologies for the pharmaceutical and energy sectors.

The functions of CFO and HRD are linked and complementary, especially in a company where 80% of the costs are salary costs.

“In this company mostly populated by engineers, my management profile could bring something, she explains. The very purpose of the company, which responds to the problems of lack of resources and sustainability that we live today today seduced me.” By using artificial intelligence, the solutions developed by N-SIDE make it possible to avoid waste by reducing the quantity of drugs needed in clinical trials by 20 to 60%.

Maud Larochette therefore becomes its first financial director. “When I arrived, the employees did not know what a CFO was. They were slightly skeptical. Everything had to be redone, from A to Z. I had no team. I started at the beginning , by setting up a resource planning software and by making sure that the figures represent who we are. I also had myself audited from the first year, without being obliged to do so.”

Today, Maud Larochette is no longer just CFO. She also manages the P&BO department, people and business organization, which has 15 employees specialized in the legal, financial and human resources management fields. For her, it is impossible to really choose between the functions of CFO and HRD: “The two are linked and complementary, especially in a company where 80% of the costs are salary costs”.

She even endorsed a time, at the end of last year, the clothes of CEO interimthe time to find a new boss for N-SIDE (who is now Arnaud Merlet).

From 35 to 250 employees

Between the time when Maud Larochette alone constituted the finance department and today, N-SIDE has undergone a profound transformation. “In March 2017, when I arrived, we were 35. Today we are 200 and we will be around 250 by the end of the year.” Turnover, which was 3.5 million euros in 2017, should reach 21 million this year.

This growth is accompanied by a new business model. “We previously had a model close to the service: we ran our solutions and we gave the results to our customers. But for three years now, our customers have been using the applications that are hosted on our site, and enter their data there. We enter in the era of SaaS ( software as a service). This transformation should allow us to focus more on license sales and have an attractive valuation.”

Another pride of Maud Larochette: N-SIDE is the first Walloon company to obtain the B Corp label. Obtained in the spring of 2020, this certification underlines N-SIDE’s commitment to societal and environmental requirements, governance and transparency. “The CFO is the person who must inspire confidence through his constant good management. Finance has an impact, concludes Maud Larochette. It requires great integrity and great transparency. Properly managed, it ensures the sustainability of the company.”
