You can be a Gazelle, run very fast, position yourself regularly in the leading pack of the classification and yet remain discreet to the point of blending in with your surroundings. The proof with Crystal Computing. Behind this crystalline name hides the Google data processing center located in Baudour. A data center where the American giant continues to invest year after year. Since its launch in 2007, no less than 4.3 billion have been injected into Hainaut, making Google the leading investor in the province (including 2.7 billion between 2016 and 2020 alone). A less labour-intensive activity, Crystal Computing employs 120 full-time equivalents in 2020 compared to a hundred in 2016. A number that should however be increased if the various subcontractors present on the Hainuyer site are included, for maintenance and security purposes in particular. In total, the company declares some 400 workers in Baudour. And if it is difficult to quantify, the more global impact of the American giant on the local economy is real. Over the past 15 years, many Gazelles have therefore benefited more or less from the financial manna poured out by Google on the lands of Hainaut. And it’s far from over: last year the group acquired another 52 hectares of land near Charleroi, at the Ecopôle, located astride the towns of Farciennes, Aiseau-Presles and Sambreville, to set up a new data center. An arrival that will energize the region and also favor local businesses, which will be able to benefit from the fallout from Google’s presence. The latter, with the Crystal Computing label, thus establishing itself more as a leading player in Hainaut.
