Gossip had renamed the old generation “BMW Scénic”, because it was the manufacturer’s first minivan with a propeller… For this second generation, BMW has changed the look of the model, so that it looks less like a monovolume, an architecture that is no longer popular today. The platform is also new and the passenger compartment transformed. There are two large screens on the dashboard, as well as a very stylish floating console between the front passengers. There are plenty of storage spaces, but we regret that all the on-board functions are controlled exclusively via the touch screen (beware of fingerprints…); for the air conditioning, separate buttons would have been more ergonomic. But the advantage of this BMW remains its modularity with, as an option, a sliding and reclining rear seat (but not available on the hybrid versions). The trunk is interesting for the size, but the long seven-seater version (Gran Tourer) is no longer on the program. Under the hood, all the engines are automatically associated with a robotic double-clutch gearbox, both in gasoline (136, 156 or 204 hp) and in diesel (136, 150 or 197 hp). There are also two plug-in hybrid powertrains (245 and 326 hp), deductible up to 100% and whose 14.9 kWh net battery officially offers up to 80 km of range in electric mode. The suspension is fairly firmly held (especially with the “M” package), but never uncomfortable. A good comfort/road-holding compromise, even if we noted some tugging of the front axle when exiting a bend on the 223i traction (an all-wheel drive is offered to avoid this). A good point for soundproofing, both mechanical and aerodynamic. In the end, BMW offers here a small family car, modern and much more enticing (both outside and inside) than the first generation of the model. A strong rival for the Mercedes B-Class…
