Art commentary

The yellow handkerchiefs of happinessa cult film in Japan, was directed by Yōji Yamada, a popular Shochiku filmmaker and screenwriter, renowned for his creation of Tora-san in the film series It’s hard to be a man (1969-1995) of which he directs 45 titles out of 48. He also produced a trilogy on the Samurai (2002-2006) and his prolific body of work has won him a plethora of international awards. Adapted from a novel by American author Pete Hamill, The yellow handkerchiefs of happiness is a warm dramatic comedy whose success will motivate a remake in 2008 The Yellow Handkerchief by Udayan Prasad. With his usual generosity and humanism, widely exploited in the adventures of Tora-san, Yōji Yamada tenderly portrays those of this improbable trio traveling the roads of Hokkaido in a brand new red Mazda. Filmed in natural settings, The yellow handkerchiefs of happiness has everything from a nice road movie cleverly combining the rare adventures of an unexpected journey, the encounters of tasty characters and the association of three protagonists as contrasting as they are picturesque. The most heterogeneous trio brings together the whimsical Kin’ya (Tetsuya Takeda), a wacky young man who has trouble controlling his impulses, Akemi (Kaori Momoi), a pretty, more or less naive young girl, and Yusaku Shima (Ken Takakura ), fresh out of prison and eager to reconnect with his ex, Mitsue (Chieko Baishō). It is the disparity of their characters that will cause all the interest of this road movie alternating empathetic scenes and confrontations, punctuated by edifying flashbacks. Among the unforgettable secondary characters, we will notice a particularly warm policeman played by the emblematic interpreter of Tora-san, Kiyoshi Atsumi… Despite his lack of realism and his melodramatic tone, The yellow handkerchiefs of happiness exudes a permanent humanism and a love for the characters, including the murderer, who ultimately become very endearing to the viewer! We can easily imagine that this walk on the roads of northern Hokkaido will lead to redemption and the triumph of love which, without a doubt, fascinated the Japanese. The film was a triumph, won several awards in its country and its filming locations have become essentials. It’s with The yellow handkerchiefs of happiness that actor Ken Takakua demonstrated the extent of his talent by playing this released prisoner who rediscovers people and the world. The directing without affectation and the ultra natural acting of all the performers give the film an irresistible spontaneity that still functions with acuity today. Pleasant.
