Hungary has reached an agreement with Russian state-owned Gazprom on additional natural gas deliveries in September and October, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced on Wednesday.
By the end of October, Budapest will be guaranteed up to 5.8 million cubic meters of Russian gas on top of the volumes already agreed in the long-term contracts. Hungary is thus boosting its energy supply as winter approaches. This agreement comes as Russiathrough its gas supplies, increases pressure on EU Member States because of their support for Ukraine. Moscow invaded this country at the end of February.
No later than Tuesday, Gazprom has told French energy giant Engie it will halt gas deliveries from Thursday due to disagreements over payments. In the meantime, all deliveries to Germany via Nord Stream have been suspended for several days due to a maintenance operation being carried out on the gas pipeline.
Additional gas destined for Hungary will be delivered via a pipeline through Turkey and the Balkans, according to Szijjarto.
