NFL: 49ers lose quarterback Trey Lance for the season

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance fell in action against the Seattle Seahawks.

Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan has confirmed that Lance will need surgery on his right ankle and his season is over.

Jimmy Garoppolo came on for Lance, who was injured late in the first quarter. Lance was carried off the field after sustaining what appears to be a right leg injury. Lance fell awkwardly, his right leg seeming to curl under him. The leg was placed in a temporary cast as he made his way to the locker room.

Lance had completed 2 of 3 passes for 30 yards and carried three times for 13 yards before leaving the game.

Jimmy Garoppolo threw a touchdown pass after replacing the injured Trey Lance and ran for another touchdown, allowing the San Francisco 49ers to beat the Seattle Seahawks 27-7 on Sunday.

The surprising decision to keep Garoppolo on a backup contract paid off almost immediately for the Niners.

He completed his first five passes in his first game since last season’s NFC Championship Game, including a 38-yard touchdown pass to Ross Dwelley that gave San Francisco a 13-0 lead (1 -1).

The Niners then got the better of the Seahawks (1-1), who looked pretty flat six days after their emotional win over former quarterback Russell Wilson and the Broncos.

Geno Smith completed 24 of 30 passes for 198 yards and one interception.

Lance took Garoppolo’s starting job this season after being selected third overall in the 2021 draft. San Francisco traded three first-round picks to move up nine spots and take Lance, making a major investment in him.

Lance spent his rookie season mostly on the bench watching Garoppolo as the Niners went all the way to the NFC Title Game before losing to the Rams.

Garoppolo completed 13 of 21 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown.

The team started the game without George Kittle and offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill. The former is suffering from a sprained groin, while the latter is trying to come back from a hamstring injury. The two are among five inactive players for the 49ers.

“I feel like the 49ers are in better shape with Garopolo,” Proulx
