The scenario San Francisco 49ers fans feared came to fruition on Monday, as the team provided a medical update on quarterback Trey Lance.
Lance suffered a serious right ankle injury Sunday against Seattle and underwent successful surgery in the past few hours, the team said in a statement.
The athlete drafted 3rd in the 2021 draft is therefore beginning a fitness phase that will lead him to a possible return next season.

“An operation was performed at Sanford University Medical Center on two sites on Lance’s right ankle. 49ers Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tim McAdams is confident he will make a full return to form in preparation for the 2023 schedule,” the Niners informed.
Lance was running with the ball late in the first quarter when he was tackled hard near the end of the line. The presence of a cart was necessary to escort the young quarterback to the locker room of his club.
It was veteran Jimmy Garoppolo who replaced him in the game, which was won 27-7 over the Seahawks.
