For a year, a hydrogen car – a Toyota Mirai – will circulate in the capital as a taxi, under the colors of Taxis Verts. This is a test organized by Virya, the energy subsidiary of the Colruyt group, and Taxis Verts, the leading player in the sector in Brussels. Objective: economically and operationally measure the use of such a vehicle. “In 2025, new registered taxis will have to be zero emissions, we are examining all the solutions”, explains Jean-Michel Courtoy, CEO of Taxis Verts. Specific licenses are planned by the Brussels Region for hydrogen taxis. Taxis Verts, a subsidiary of the D’Ieteren group, is also studying the electrification of the fleet of taxis which are operated by independents. The advantage of hydrogen vehicles is the speed of refueling: just a few minutes. Electric taxis take longer to charge at terminals, even fast ones, but are cheaper to buy. The hydrogen used will be green, produced by electrolysis using electricity from Virya wind turbines. For this trial year, the taxi will fill up at the Dats 24 stations of the Colruyt group, in Halle or in Zaventem. If a deployment is envisaged by Taxi Verts, a station could be installed in Brussels. The vehicle’s autonomy, of the order of 650 km, makes it possible to envisage a full tank every two or three days.
