No marriage TF1-M6 – Trends-Tendances on PC

Faced with the intransigence of the Competition Authority, TF1 and M6, as had been expected for several weeks, gave up their merger project. However, the two groups will not remain in the state.

The press release fell Friday after the closing of the Paris Stock Exchange: faced with the intransigence of the Competition Authority (ADLC) which only saw the sale of TF1 or M6 as a solution to accept the marriage and which therefore emptied the merging of all industrial logic, Bouygues and Bertelsmann ended their marriage. In an interview with the French newspaper Les Echos, Benoît Coeuré, the boss of the ADLC, explains why he did not subscribe to the point of view of the two media giants: “The project was relevant from an industrial point of view, there is no doubt, but the subject is not there: such a group would have had an excessive market power on the national territory”. According to him, the presence of platforms like Netflix or Amazon Prime does not create, at this stage, or even from a prospective point of view, sufficient or significant competitive pressure on linear television. After having spent nearly 100 million euros in this marriage, what will TF1 and M6 do today in the face of a threat that they consider very real? On the side of TF1, on the strength of Bouygues’ experience in telecoms, there is talk of an acceleration of the “platformization” of content, of offers with variable geometry to reach a very large audience. Things are more complicated for M6. If Bertelsmann confirms its desire to sell, it will have to move quickly. Indeed, the French regulation stipulates that there cannot be resale in the five years which follow the renewal to emit. This renewal must fall on May 6. Who to replace TF1? An ousted competitor like Vivendi, Xavier Niel, Daniel Kretinsky or Mediaset? Or a newcomer like Rodolphe Saadé, the powerful boss of CMA CGM?
