What is the average income of Belgians? – Economic policy

The Belgian statistics office Statbel shared this Thursday the average net taxable income in 2020. A national average which however hides strong disparities.

The average net taxable income amounted in Belgium in 2020 to 19,671 euros, said Thursday the Belgian statistics office Statbel. However, this national average conceals strong disparitiesbetween Regions, provinces and municipalities, the north of the country showing the highest incomes overall, while the lowest are found in Brussels.

Thus in Flanders, the average net income per inhabitant reached 21,078 euros, i.e. 7.2% more than the national average., says Statbel. The incomes of Walloons and Brussels residents were lower, with an average in the south of 18,518 euros (5.9% less than the national average) and in Brussels of 15,444 euros (21.5% less).

At the provincial level, it is still the two Brabants that are at the top of the ranking of the highest incomes. In Flemish Brabant, the average annual income per inhabitant was 22,836 euros net and in its Walloon neighbor, at 22,482 euros. All the Flemish provinces are then at the top of the ranking and we have to wait for seventh place to find a second Walloon province, in this case that Luxembourg (19,363 euros). The Walloon province with the lowest average net income per inhabitant is that of Hainaut, with 17,118 euros. It is nevertheless located above the Brussels-Capital Region.

Statbel has also broken down the data by municipality and the one with the highest net per capita income is Sint-Martens-Latem (East Flanders) with 30,859 euros.

At the other end, the Brussels municipality of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode has the lowest average income per inhabitant, with 10,564 euros. Two other Brussels municipalities follow: Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and Anderlecht.
