Brussels welcomes a 68th comic book fresco in Laeken – Immo

The Vandergoten fresco, named after the real estate project of which it is part, was inaugurated Thursday afternoon in Laeken. This is the 68th achievement to be part of the Brussels region’s comic book trail.

On the imposing painting of 90 square meters, one can see a colorful set of buildings representing the real buildings adjacent to the new Vandergoten condominium. The whole forms a slice of life imagined by the designer Émilie Plateau. Although this one is at the origin of the sketch which served as a model for the realization of the fresco, all the ideas composing it are not from her.

“This is a project in collaboration with the inhabitants of the Vandergoten site. When I was contacted to create this fresco, they offered me ideas such as the importance of vegetation, diversity, but also the integration of the project in the life of the district”, explains the author. “Based on certain photos that were given to me, I notably represented some inhabitants. I mixed everything that I was asked to mix to make my drawing”, she continues.

This brand new fresco is the fifth to see the light of day in Laeken in two years, some time after the three made in Haren. Almost all of these achievements put women in the spotlight.

“We realized that, until 2018, almost all the frescoes had been made by men or featured men. This is not normal. So, since that date, we have carried out a feminization with eleven of the twelve frescoes made by women or representing women. This way, they also have the possibility of entering the wall pantheon of Brussels”, explains Arnaud Pinxteren, alderman of Urban Renovation and Citizen Participation of Brussels.

The work was painted in about twenty days by Laurent Paschold, member of “L’Atelier 30”, specialist in mural painting.

“I am moved and impressed to see my drawing enlarged in this way on a wall, especially since I originally made it on an A4 sheet”, concludes Émilie Plateau.
