Call for DNA donation to solve a “cold case” – Trends-Tendances sur PC

More than 300 Flemings are ready to give up their DNA to try to find the perpetrator of a 30-year-old crime.

Owner of a real estate agency in Knokke, Ingrid Caeckaert (photo) was 26 years old. In March 1991, she was found in the hall of her apartment, stabbed 62 times. Resisting her attacker, she had injured him and he had left traces of blood, so that we know that it was a man. So far, all attempts at correlation with already known DNAs have proved unsuccessful. Hence the idea of expanding research via the Y chromosome that only men have. The latter, explains Sofie Claerhout, a researcher specializing in forensic genetics, is transmitted almost intact from father to son, so that 40 generations later, it is still identifiable. Kinships can thus be reconstituted and identified. Hence the televised appeal launched by Farouk Ozgünes, investigative journalist of VTM. In the Netherlands, the technique has been used for about ten years and has already solved a few cold cases, such as the Marianne Vaatstra case, murdered and raped in 1999 after returning from a party, which required 8,000 samples. “The crime took place in Knokke, the victim was from Maldegem and the clues collected by the investigators suggest that the assassin is a regional, so that 500 samples should be enough”, comments Sofie Claerhout. There remains a small problem: this type of research, permitted in the Netherlands, is prohibited here. The law only authorizes the search for identical matches, not that of close matches. However, the Minister of Justice confirms that he is working on an adaptation of the law.
