Amazon boss Jeff Bezos and rapper Jay-Z could invest in an American football club based in the capital, Washington.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is interested in buying the NFL franchise from the NFL’s Washington Commanders and rap star Jay-Z could join him as an investor, several US media report.
the washington post and the magazine People, citing each of the unnamed sources, suggest that Jeff Bezos is considering making an offer and that Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, could partner with him. The boss of Amazon, whose platform has been broadcasting NFL matches on Thursday evenings since this season, on the basis of a contract worth one billion dollars, is also the owner of the washington post.
On Wednesday, Commanders Dan and Tanya Snyder at the heart of the turmoil said they had approached a bank to work on “potential transactions“, without specifying whether these relate to a transfer of shares or a full transfer of the club.
In July 2021, a year after Washington Post revelations that 40 former female employees had been sexually harassed by Snyder and others at the club, an independent commission of inquiry found that bullying, intimidation and sexual harassment were commonplace in this workplace. The NFL subsequently fined the franchise $10 million.
A franchise estimated at more than 5 billion dollars
Dan Snyder acquired the club and its stadium in 1999 for $800 million. The last NFL franchise to be sold was the Denver Broncos this summer for $4.65 billion.
A record that Bezos, the world’s fourth-richest person with a $113.2 billion wallet, would break if he bought Commanders, according to Forbes which in August estimated the value of the franchise at $5.6 billion.
Another businessman, Byron Allen, owner of Entertainment Studios, is interested in the Commanders, further advances the washington post. If he managed to buy out the franchise, he would become the first majority black owner of an NFL team.
