At the beginning of November, the famous Ladybugs of Bellewaerde, whose “double 8” enchanted generations of young and old, stopped their merry-go-round. The caterpillar wagons were uncoupled and a privileged few were able to acquire at a high price (6,200 euros) the rare copies having been put up for public sale for the benefit of Think Pink, a non-profit organization which fights against breast cancer. Built in 1981, these roller coasters will be replaced by a new water attraction unique in the world, according to its promoters. Its installation will require 10 months of work as well as an investment of 16 million euros. Other projects, including the renovation of the Carrousel restaurant, which will be transformed into a medieval castle, the modernization of the habitat for giraffes and zebras, which will be heated by geothermal energy, and the construction of two new family attractions will make the site a gigantic project in which a total of some 40 million euros will be invested. Founded in 1954, Bellewaerde was originally a safari park in which Albert Florizoone had installed his collection of exotic birds, gradually transforming into an amusement park. Perhaps the gene was familial? Even before the war, Alberic Florizoone, a beekeeper cousin, had had the idea of opening around his Adinkerke factory a recreational park intended to make the product he produced better known: honey, an anagram of what would become Meli. Taken over shortly before the turn of the century by Studio 100, Meli Park was renamed Plopsaland. Bellewaerde, for its part, has been a subsidiary of the Compagnie Française des Alpes since 2006. It also annually attracts 40% of visitors from the north of France. In 10 years, the group intends to invest 100 million euros there.
