Review by: Smirty Sharma

Freddy with Kartik Aaryan and Alaya F started streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from December 2, 2022. The film is directed by Shashanka Ghosh, whose most notable films include Khoobsurat, Veere Di Wedding, Plan A Plan B. So, watching Freddy’s trailer, it was obvious that it’s a genre he’s never tried before. Therefore, there were no great expectations from the film itself. However, its male star, Kartik Aaryan, has been the rare one to shine in the recent past when success has been so unpredictable and the biggest of stars and tried and tested formulas have ceased to work. He first created huge and positive noise with his OTT release Dhamaka and then the theatrical smasher Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. The fact that he was trying something new again was reason enough to be excited about what Freddy has in store. Reserve. Read the new movie’s verdict review on OTT this week.

What is it about?

Freddy is about Dr. Freddy Ginwala (Kartik Aaryan), who is a shy and lonely dentist, looking to find his soul mate. He is registered on a dating site and has met many girls, but the “lack of compatibility” has prevented him from taking the next step. A chance encounter with Kainaz Irani (Alaya F) at a wedding turns into love at first sight. Freddy is stunned, but the bubble bursts when he realizes she is married to a controlling and overly possessive Rustom (Sajjad Delafrooz). But that’s not the end of their story. Freddy and Kainaz soon go from strangers to doctor-patient and this gives Freddy another chance to be close to Kainaz and observe her closely enough to know she is in a bad marriage; desperate to get out but unable to. Frustrated with what has become of her life with the monster wife-beater she is married to, Kainaz finds solace in Freddy’s arms. But they can’t be together until Rustom exists. Is it love or his obsession that makes Freddy, day doctor, a criminal with a dangerous mind? Will Freddy finally unite with his soul mate Kainaz? The twists and turns of what follows as Freddy and Kainaz try to face off are what makes most of the story.

What’s hot?

Kartik Aaryan as Freddy is a joy to watch. The actor will leave you amazed with his layered performance. The way he goes from being a sweet, shy, smiling dentist to someone who is able to plot and plan something sinister is incredible. The fact that he makes the switch effortlessly shows the amount of work that has gone into preparing for his role. He’s endearing one moment and scares you the next as you try to figure out what his next step would be. Alaya F is making the most of the screen time given to him, but it seems the director no longer sees the need to “extricate” himself from his character. The BGM completes the plot and the storyline is decent. But aside from Kartik’s performance, there’s not much to tell.

What is not?

All is well until Freddy turns into a revenge drama. While the plot focuses on small sadistic acts of revenge, there’s nothing to the way it’s planned. Although the acts are quite cruel in nature, the lack of detail makes everything seem juvenile. What could have been something that keeps you on the edge of the seat and makes you anxious turns into an incredible series of events. Although Kartik did justice to his role as Freddy, there was huge leeway to better sketch his character. There is a huge gap when it comes to understanding his childhood trauma and how he overcame it, or not, and whether that had a part to play in making him the person he turns out to be. to be an adult. The plot needed a good “filler” to save Freddy from damage.

BL Verdict

Watch Freddy to see Kartik Aaryan in a never-before-seen avatar. The actor improves with each project and surpasses himself. With Freddy, he took a definite risk trying something new and difficult where there was vast scope and a danger of faltering with each scene. He put his dedication and hard work into playing Dr. Freddy and it shows. An extra star just for Kartik for choosing a role out of his comfort zone and doing him justice.
