New England Patriots NFL 2022

Squad, Draft and goals for the season

To dawn of the 2022 season, We Sport looks back on the situation of the 32 NFL franchises. Today, zoom on the New England Patriots, looking for stability.

The balance sheet of New England Patriots last season

For year II of the era post Tom Brady, the Patriots have found a new lease of life. In the wake of rookie Mac Jones, the Massachusetts franchise has regained momentum offensively (6e most productive offense) while continuing to be one of the strongest defenses in the league (2e defense with the fewest points). Second in their division behind the Bills, the Patriots also came up against Buffalo in Wild Cardsdouble executioner of Bill Belichick’s men in 2021.

An ultimately encouraging season, with many positive points and a brighter future after the chaos caused by the departure of the best player in the world.

The movements of the off-season

Having a quarterback is good, being able to surround him is better! With this in mind, New England has mainly bet, through the draft, the Free Agency and overtime, on the offensive line and receivers. Spearheading the offensive trench, Trent Brown will remain on the blindside, while rookie Cole Strange will replace Shaq Mason inside and Daryl Williams will enter the rotation. Among receivers, DeVante Parker and Tyquan Thornton densify a group still in search of a real No. 1.

On the other side of the ball, the record is much less encouraging for the Patriots. If the eternal Devin McCourty was extended, this was not the case for JC Jackson, one of the leaders of this defense. New England also suffered losses on their second curtain, where Kyle Van Noy left, Dont’a Hightower was not retained and Mack Wilson arrived in exchange for Chase Winowich. Note all the same the return of Malcolm Butler in the secondaryor the extension of Matthew Slater, one of the best players in the league on special teams.

Major arrivals: CB Malcolm Butler (Cardinal), CB Terrance Mitchell (Texans), WR DeVante Parker (dolphins), OL Darryl Williams (), LB Mack Wilson (Browns)

Notable departures: LB Dont’a Hightower (—) CB JC Jackson (Chargers), VS Ted Karras (Bengals), OG Shaq Mason (Buccaneers), LB Kyle Van Noy (Chargers)

Extensions: TO Trent Brown, S Devin McCourty (Patriots), ST Matthew Slater

Draft*: OG Cole Strange (Chatanooga), WR Tyquan Thornton (Baylor), CB Marcus Jones (Houstons)

* Only the players selected during the first two days are mentioned.

The number of New England Patriots 2022/2023

Despite significant losses, New England will still be able to rely on its defense, built in particular around Matt Judon and the young Christian Barmore. The back lines will have to be rebuilt around veterans like Devin McCourty and Malcolm Butler, two players who know Bill Belichick’s methods by heart.

Nice surprise from last season, Mac Jones will be the spearhead of an attack in need of stars. Around the sophomore, only rookie DeVante Parker stands out against the skills positions, and the returning Joe Judge, offensive assistant formerly coach of the Giants, will have to find solutions to make his quarterback shine. Note that the Patriots will also be able to rely on good special teams, where Matthew Slater will be the leader by example.

New England Patriots : Ambitions and ranking

For the third year post-Brady, New England will aim to continue its progress. After returning to the playoffs last year and having (surely) found their quarterback of the future, the Patriots will absolutely have to qualify for the playoffs. If it will be difficult to get the Bills in theAFC West, the franchise will have to maintain, at a minimum, its status as No. 2 in a division that has been strengthened. And, once the postseason reached, who knows what Bill Belichick’s men will be capable of?

Player to watch: Mac Jones

After a more than interesting rookie season, Mac Jones will have to confirm for his second year in the NFL. Now embodying the future of his franchise, the former Alabama player will have to continue to progress, despite a supporting cast which has not necessarily improved. If he confirms the hopes placed in him, New England will surely be delighted to have found his quarterback for the next fifteen years.

The words “Minnesota Miracle” and “No-Call” are scratched from my vocabulary. My heart mourns the retirement of Drew Brees and the loneliness of RJ Barrett in Madison Square Garden.
