How does the Barbie 2023 universe work?
One of the most confusing things is exactly how the Barbie 2023 universe works. The 2001 aspect of the trailer is clearly a throwaway joke, but it’s unclear if it was footage shot for the teaser itself or if they will appear to some extent in the film’s intro. However, the barrage of images from Barbie’s world seem to take place entirely in fictional environments and dream homes sold by toy stores. Even though it’s already been announced that Ferrell will play a fictional CEO of Mattel, there are presumably scenes set in the real world.
Essentially, there are most likely two ways Barbie’s interaction with the real world can play out. The first possibility draws inspiration from Tyra Banks’ 2000 TV movie Life-Size or the Disney princess film Enchanted, where Barbie is pulled from this abstract fantasy space into the real world and becomes a fish out of water. The second idea is more akin to 2014’s The Lego Movie, where the Lego universe is only briefly interrupted by a live-action sequence offering the actual explanation of the movie’s storyline.
Considering that Ferrell also played a similar role in The Lego Movie live-action reveal, Barbie’s premise may align with this possibility. However, most of the details of the film remain a mystery. Presumably, the full trailer will offer a bit more information on how it all works, though it could still be several months before the premiere.
