The Buffalo Bills cemented their place in the playoffs on Saturday night with a 32-29 win over the Miami Dolphins in snowy Highpark Stadium.
Tyler Bass hit a short 25-yard field goal as time ran out to earn Buffalo (11-3) a spot in the postseason schedule for the fourth straight year.
Even in the event of a loss, Buffalo’s qualification could have been confirmed on Sunday with a draw combined with a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots or New York Jets.
The Bills also moved closer to their third straight AFC East title. They have a three-game priority over the second-place Dolphins.
Josh Allen and his offense stepped on the gas in the fourth quarter, outscoring 11-3 to run away with the win.
It was the fourth time during the 2022 season that Allen had led a late-game offensive streak that allowed his team to win.
Facing the Dolphins secondary, he had 304 yards through the air, in addition to throwing four touchdowns and not being the victim of an interception.
Allen added 77 rushing yards on 10 carries and dipped for the two-point convert that tied the game at 29-29 with 9:02 left in the duel.
The Bills’ star quarterback has 36 touchdowns so far, which is the most in the NFL.
Opposite Tua Tagovailoa passed for 234 yards, including 67 on an explosive play leading to Jayden Waddle’s middle finger early in the third quarter.
Sean McDermott’s squad had yet had a miserable third quarter, dominated 13-0 by the visitors.
It’s the third straight loss for the Dolphins (8-6), who lost 23-17 to the Chargers last week and 33-17 to the San Francisco 49ers the week before.
The Bills have now won their last six meetings at home against the Dolphins. Their longest streak against division rivals was just six, and it had happened twice in the past, against the Colts and once against the Patriots.
McDermott is the head coach with the best winning ratio (10-2 / 0.818) against Miami in a career among those who have coached a minimum of eight games.
The Miami squad is trying to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
