“It’s absolute madness on the set”: the filming of Coppola’s Megalopolis would have sunk into chaos – Actus Ciné

Megalopolis, the new project of maestro Francis Ford Coppola, would experience serious difficulties. The filming, which is currently taking place in Atlanta, would have descended into total chaos.

Legendary director of The Godfather, Apocalypse Now or Dracula, Francis Ford Coppola is currently shooting his new feature film, the very ambitious Megalopolis.

According to Variety, the director would encounter enormous difficulties with in particular the departure of several technicians to important positions such as the chief decorator or the artistic director.

Also, last December, the special effects team jumped ship; a blow for Coppola on a work of such great magnitude.

The filmmaker would have liked to use the same special effects techniques as on the series The Mandalorian. But that wouldn’t have worked and he would have laid off the entire VFX team to start over on more traditional bases with green funds, generating crazy additional costs.

“There is no right answer here. Coppola is going to spend a lot more money than expected. You can imagine how much he has already invested. It would be a very hard pill to swallow if he couldn’t finish the film”revealed to Variety an executive of the production.

According to the sources cited by Variety, the shooting would have sunk into chaos, a bit like that of Apocalypse Now in the 1970s, reputed to be one of the worst experiences in the history of cinema.

For this feature film that has become a classic, Coppola had broken a key rule in Hollywood, that of not spending his own money to finance budget overruns. Despite the Apocalypse Now experience, the filmmaker, who experienced immense difficulties in launching his project, decided to self-finance it to the tune of 120 million dollars.

Today, the filming of Megalopolis would be halfway through, but Coppola would not be sure he could continue it. The budget would have exploded, resignations and dismissals would have decimated the various artistic departments and the director would have lost control of this enormous machinery.

Also according to Variety, the rep for one of the fired talents said his firing was a blessing. “It was absolute madness on set”entrusted this person.

Despite this waltz of departures, Coppola would put all his energy into quickly finding staff to continue filming. Will he manage to box this project which is particularly close to his heart?

As a reminder, at 83, the American filmmaker wants to strike a blow in what would be his last project. This overly ambitious feature film has been in the works for many years. We also returned to the genesis of the film in this dossier on the aborted projects of great directors.

Described by the maestro as an SF film under the influence of novelist Ayn Rand, famous for her works depicting dystopian universes, Megalopolis takes place in a New York city trying to rebuild itself after a cataclysm.

A reconstruction carried out by an architect who is trying to (re)build a small utopian town called “Cityworld”, in the heart of the Big Apple.

“It has become a kind of religious war, in the sense that it is not based on any logic. I think the important information is that I am still the same as 20 or 40 years ago. I always want to make a dream movie, even if I have to bet my own money, I’m able to put out 100 million dollars if I have to. I don’t want to, but if I have to I will. would”assured Francis Ford Coppola.

The filmmaker can count on his fortune acquired thanks to his vineyards, part of which has recently been sold, to finance part of the film. And the least we can say is that he is more motivated than ever.

“I am committed to making this film, I would like to shoot it in the fall of 2022. All my casting is not validated, but I have enough to be sure that it will be an exciting distribution. The film will cost between 100 and $120 million. But obviously I’d prefer it to be closer to 100.”had entrusted the native of Detroit last year.

To realize his dream, the artist has hired an exceptional cast: Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Zendaya, Aubrey Plaza, Laurence Fishburne, Cate Blanchett, Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Michelle Pfeiffer and Nathalie Emmanuel are in the game.

Will Francis Ford Coppola finally succeed in completing this lifelong project? Like Martin Scorsese with The Irishman, will he leave the world of cinema one last great gargantuan fresco before bowing out? Response in 2023!

“Everybody wants to make the next Marvel, but nobody wants to make a movie that really gives hope to young people, where we’re ready to come together and solve whatever problems come our way.”hammered Coppola at the microphone of Deadline in 2021. This statement appears to be prophetic in view of the latest revelations on the set of Megalopolis.

Note that the director’s last film dates back to 2012 with Twixt. Recently, he released a director’s cut version of The Godfather 3 titled “The Death of Michael Corleone”, more in line with his vision, available on Blu-ray and DVD.
