A robbery, a trio and a cross-border road movie with multiple surprises mirroring the geopolitics of the Balkans, with the Football World Cup as the objective, but a road strewn with pitfalls. At the European Film Market at the 73rd Berlinale (February 16-26), French international sales company Reel Suspects, run by Matteo Lovadinawill premiere SavagesCroatian’s first feature-length fiction film Dario Lonjak who had signed in 2021 the medium-length documentary The Eagle of Fiume (about the Italian writer Gabriele D’Annunzio). Produced by Jozo Patljak for Alka Film and passed notably by Pula Festival, Savages is interpreted by Alen Liveric, Branko Jankovic, Borko Peric, Dejan Acimovic and Slavko Sobin. Written by Velimir GrgicDario Lonjak and Ivo Balenovic, the storyline centers on Zolja, a Croatian war veteran, Jasmin, a Bosnian smuggler, and Mali, a Roma driver, who decide to rob a gas station on their way to the finals of the 2018 World Cup. , they cross the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and get lost in a camp of radical Islamist terrorists. In their struggle for survival, we will discover their past, traveling from the Balkan wars of the 90s to the fears of 21st century Europe.

In the line-up of Reel Suspects also stands out If Yes, Okay from Dutch Dick Verdult which will make its world premiere in the Harbor program of the next Rotterdam Film Festival (January 25 to February 5). The plot centers on the Spijkerbergs, an extremely wealthy but equally absurdly whimsical family. The father, a wacky finance crack, collects miniature dioramas of historical atrocities. The mother is a has-been prima donna struggling with the vagaries of age and fame. But their daughter, who inherited their privileges and occasional cruelty, is a rebellious teenager yearning to break out of that gilded cage… Played by Lola Koppen, Peter Fengler and Ekaterina Leventalthis black comedy was produced by De Productie.

Also noteworthy in the line-up, the Japanese horror and science fiction title New Religion of Keishi Kondo which continues its festival tour and will make its US premiere at a Slamdance (January 20-26).
